‘Glee’ season 5: Demi Lovato talks honor of playing Santana love interest
Even though not a single episode of hers has aired as of yet, there has already been quite a bit made over Demi Lovato getting an opportunity to play an extensive role on “Glee” season 5. She will be a new love interest for Naya Rivera’s character of Santana, which is something that has only drawn controversy because of Brittana fans wanting to see Santana remaining single for the sake of her getting back together with Brittany.
So what does Demi have to say in general about playing a lesbian character, and the impact that it could have on viewers at home? In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, she did her best to explain:
“I don’t want people to take from this, ‘Oh my god, Demi is kissing a girl.’ I want people to take from it this is actually an incredible step in our generation today where I’m able to play a young lesbian on primetime TV…
“I’m honored to be able to be hopefully inspiring people with my character to be who they are and not be afraid of it or ashamed.”
This role marks Demi’s first extended arc on TV since leaving her Disney Channel show “Sonny with a Chance,” but it is not her first-ever guest-starring appearance on primetime TV. She previously had a brief guest role on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” back when she was still a part of the Disney universe. Now she has both this “Glee” role and a spot as a judge on “The X Factor,” which is kicking off its third season on Wednesday.
“Glee” season 5 will debut on Fox on Thursday, September 26 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. Click here if you want to see the first promo with new footage, but there has not been any clip yet released of Demi’s character.
