‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6 spoilers: Can Ron Perlman’s Clay really find redemption?
We’ve said this before, but a weird thing happened at the end of “Sons of Anarchy” season 5: It was almost easier to sympathize with Clay than it was to hate him anymore. This is a guy that has done some unspeakable and awful things, to the point where we could not sit there at times and really pinpoint if there was a single nice thing about him. Now, he’s behind bars, and in a very unusual situation for him. He’s gone from potentially having everyone in SAMCRO to no one, and of course this maps a very different perspective for him.
Perhaps it is for this reason that executive producer Kurt Sutter tells TVLine that the character this year is on what is very much a “redemptive path… There’s a certain amount of resignation and understanding of who he is and the things that he’s done; he’ll try to go out with a little bit of dignity.” (Personally, we have a hard time believing that Clay will “go out” anytime soon, given that this guy has become a human cockroach.)
To us, what makes hearing about Clay’s story all the more powerful is what Ron Perlman said to us and others during a panel discussion at Fan Expo last month in Toronto: This is a role that has become uncomfortable for him to play, and he’s had several conversations with Sutter about trying to find something to relate to. Maybe seeing more of Clay’s human side this season will help with the process, but he’s also going to have a man potentially standing in the way of almost anything that he wants to do: Lee Toric. Donal Logue’s character is going to be around for most of the season, and he has his own plans to enact revenge on SAMCRO and everyone close to them.
Luckily, you don’t have to wait much longer to find out more. “Sons of Anarchy” season 6 will premiere on FX come Tuesday, September 10 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.
