‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9 spoilers: Cobie Smulders on possible Robin Sparkles hurrah

Cobie Smulders’ Robin has been a fixture of “How I Met Your Mother” since the very beginning, but to go along with this character, there has also been an alter ego in Robin Sparkles that has been equally entertaining. From “Let’s Go to the Mall” to “Sandcastles in the Sand” to even that bizarre Alanis Morissette episode from this past season, some of these episodes are the best of the show.

But can there really be another video out there featuring her? The problem here is twofold: You have to not only top all of the embarrassing Robin Sparkles videos that are out there already, but you have to find a way to do it that makes sense. Is Barney really going to stop his wedding planning to show off some old tape from years ago? Probably, but everyone else has to be willing to watch.

The future of this character was discussed recently by Smulders to IGN, and she is confident that we will have at least one more Robin Sparkles appearance … even if it does not happen via conventional means:

“The sad thing is I feel like Robin Sparkles is at her best in the ‘80s. We’ve run out of ideas of ways to discover this, like, “Oh my gosh, there’s this video! I found this old VHS! I’m gonna dust it off and put it on.” So I feel like we’re gonna have to work that a little bit. Maybe it will be a song to the groom at the wedding, but I don’t know. I think she’ll have to come back in some way, I just don’t know which way they’re going to take it yet.”

There are some other important storylines to get to regarding Robin this year; we’re still holding out hope for the possibility of meeting her mom this season, and there is also (start playing the dramatic music) the possibility that she and Ted need to tackle some of the business that they still have with each other.
