‘So You Think You Can Dance’ review: Did Aaron Turner, Amy Yakima make top 10?
After much waiting, the announcement is finally here as to who are the top ten on “So You Think You Can Dance” this year, and it’s a crop that you have to be pretty excited about. You’ve got strong performers in every style, favorites, and underdogs. This is not the top 10 we expected a month or so ago, but now that it’s here, it feels like this is the top ten that is going to be the most exciting moving forward to the rest of the season.
We’re going to do something a little bit different since we’re putting up this review a little later than usual. Rather than putting the focus solely on the performers and what they did last night, we’re going to give a brief profile for every one of the top ten dancers moving forward when it comes to their skill set, advantages, and odds of making it far.
Aaron Turner – He came into the top 20 as a last-minute replacement, and to be honest, we didn’t expect much. But what has emerged here is a natural-born entertainer, and our favorite dancer of the entire season. He’s extremely skilled, but also extremely relatable, and that isn’t something you typically get from these dancers.
Fik-Shun – Some recent stumbles show that he has weaknesses when it comes to his vulnerability, but he is one of those hip-hop dancers that does not always even feel like a hip-hop dancer when it comes to some of his skills.
Nico Greetham – We didn’t necessarily like Nico’s earlier routines, but he’s grown on us, and with Fik-Shun’s inconsistency and Tucker’s injury, we could see him making the top three men without really that much trouble.
Paul Karmiryan – A great, great ballroom dancer. One of the best that this show has ever had, and someone that “Dancing with the Stars” already has set on speed dial. Either he or Aaron will probably win this thing.
Tucker Knox – It was somewhat of a surprise to see Tucker make it here over Alan Bersten, given that there is an injury to consider here. But Nigel Lythgoe probably knew that with 4 appearances in the bottom, there was no way that Alan could have won.
Amy Yakima – How has she been in the bottom three ever? The problem with the ladies left is that they are all pretty strong with Malece Miller’s exit, and we are excited to see how this is going to shake down.
Hayley Erbert – We lose sight of Hayley sometimes, and we’re not sure why since her dancing is so good. Maybe this is just a symptom of there being four women in the top five who are all brunettes, which makes them blend together at times.
Jasmine Harper – Thanks in part to working with Aaron, he has helped her in the same way that she has helped them. They’ve been one of our favorite teams ever, and her challenge will come now in going solo.
Jenna Johnson – Really not resonating with viewers for whatever reason, but may be safe now thanks to a great paso doble with Alex Wong. More Alex Wong! Sadly, tonight may have been his only appearance of the season.
Makenzie Dustman – She has struggled occasionally when it comes to getting fan support, but she has a great sense of musicality, and with the right routine could rise to the top as a contender again.
