‘Supernatural’ season 9, ‘The Originals’ premiere dates shift upward

The CW has apparently adopted both an interesting and rather-smart strategy when it comes to their fall schedule this year: Wait to see what sort of news is breaking across the entertainment community, and then adjust your premiere dates according. When it comes to the impatient, this is all ultimately good news just for the sake of shows starting earlier than previously planned.

1. “The Vampire Diaries” will now be the first show on the schedule to premiere, and it will do so on Thursday, October 3 followed by “The Originals” at 9:00. Obviously, the move here is to get more viewers attached to Klaus and company before shipping them off to their new time slot on Tuesday night. The CW is also leaving their spot on October 10 at 9:00 open, which we believe is strategic since this is when “Glee” will air its tribute to Cory Monteith. “Reign” was going to air at this time, but it now premieres on October 17 at 9:00.

2. “Supernatural” season 9 now premieres a week earlier on October 8. The only reason for the October 15 date was because the network did not want to air “The Originals” before “The Vampire Diaries” started, but that’s no longer an issue.

This may all sound confusing and in some ways it is, but the one positive is that for the week of October 8, there will be new programming airing every night from Monday to Thursday, which was not the case previously. In the end, we still see that as a win, but there are also no new series on the network’s schedule for the fall right now save for “The Originals” that we feel are a ratings slam-dunk. “The Tomorrow People” is risky, and “Reign” may be a bridge too far for the network’s young viewers.
