‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Nina Dobrev on Elena, Damon, and college

The Vampire Diaries CastThe Vampire Diaries” may be a show about people biting others and drinking their blood (thought you’d love to have that image to start things off), but at its core, it is also just as much a story about love. You have some characters who have wandered for over a century without that special someone at their side, and now there is someone in Elena who can fill that void.

Of course, the problem is that Elena is perceived as this sort of romantic “savior” by two separate guys, and right now, Damon is in the lead in the race for her heart. So now that he is done pursuing her and actually has her, what is he going to do about it? Well, try to have a normal relationship. You’ve heard a little bit already this summer about how the honeymoon phase will still be there for the couple at the start of season 5, but Nina Dobrev teases to TV Fanatic that (of course!) all things peaceful for them could be at an end soon enough:

“I think there still on that high, and they’re going to try to make it work … But it’s a vampire show, it’s our show. Nobody’s ever going to be happy for long.”

Dobrev also sort-of answered another burning question here as to whether or not we would see Damon making the move with her to college; however, her comment that “college is [only] a few hours away” suggests that he is still for whatever reason still in Mystic Falls. Why do that? Is the blood really that much better in the town? It just feels like a university would be the perfect ground for blood left and right: Drunk college kids with no idea what they’re doing half of the time.
