Euphoria season 3 episode 8 (finale): Final expectations

Tomorrow night on HBO, we are going to have a chance to see Euphoria season 3 episode 8 and from where we sit, it is more than understandable to have high hopes.

After all, let’s just remind everyone that this is going to be a story more than an hour and a half long, meaning that the network is basically giving you a feature film. It is also going to serve as a potential series finale; the network is not promoting it as such, but there are a lot of universes out there where it could be, depending on whether or not a lot of key talent is interested in returning. It feels far too early to say anything at this point with a measure of confidence.

Heading into the episode in general, though, the biggest thing that we can say is that Rue’s survival will be paramount to everything … and there is no guarantee that she makes it. Even though Euphoria just killed Nate in episode 7, we also have a hard time thinking that Sam Levinson will shy away from another shock. It may still not be Rue — we’re not sure he would ever do this unless he was certain Zendaya was leaving the show — but it could be someone else. Multiple other characters have now become wrapped up in his mess in one way or another.

So what about the other characters? We do think that Cassie is going to be facing a crossroads now that Nate is gone — she has to really think about what she really wants for herself now. Meanwhile, is Jules going to stay in her present situation? Will she actually get more airtime? Out of all the stories that we have had a chance to see throughout the season so far, it is easy to say that this is the one that has been done the least overall justice. Not only does it still feel incomplete, but there is no real sense that there could be some sort of jaw-dropper in the finale to make it all worthwhile.

We do imagine that there will at least be closure at the end of the finale — not offering that would be diabolical with the future uncertain.
