Is ‘American Idol’ looking for next Phillip Phillips with guitar change?

American IdolWell, “American Idol” is not waiting very long at all before trying to pimp out guitar players again on their show, did they? One year after having their lowest ratings (and coronation song sales) ever, the producers are changing things up, and making sure all singer-songwriters know that you can now bring your guitar to some of the auditions.

You can check out the full list of audition cities and dates here, and we don’t really see the guitar change as that drastic a shift at all. Basically, if you want to play the guitar and the producers want to hear you do it, then you’ll get an opportunity; otherwise, you are out of luck.

Obviously, the danger here is that producers may not want another winner who is a good-looking guy with a guitar, but there are plenty of other types of people who also play the instrument. Plus, we’ve learned already from a ratings standpoint that having a winner of this variety is not the worst thing ever, given that it’s what people tune in to watch. We’d personally rather see the show continue with a predictable winner than no show at all, given that all singers who go far on this show benefit from it in some way. Plus, you can’t knock the fact that despite many people writing him off during the season, Phillip has gone on to be the most-successful winner of the show in years. So long as the entire top five is not all guitar strummers this coming year, we don’t have any problem with this.

What do you think about this change to the format, and do you think this is a reactive move to the lack of singer / songwriter types to make it near the end of this past season? (Yes, we know that both Angie Miller and Kree Harrison do fit that mold still.) If you want to read some more news about past contestants, including Adam Lambert and Lee DeWyze, you can do so over here.
