Call the Midwife season 16: Show EP on future setting

As we prepare to see the Call the Midwife season 15 finale on BBC One tomorrow night, it is not lost on us that the future is a little abstract. While we know that a season 16 is eventually coming, it won’t be right away! In the meantime, there is a little bit of a reset taking place — there is a prequel series coming up and then after that, a feature film starring some cast members from the original show.
In looking then to season 16, one obvious question has to be this: If we’re looking at sweeping changes, what will a big one be? Well, from where we sit at present, a lot could be tied to the setting.

Speaking to the Radio Times, creator Heidi Thomas certainly indicates that the series is moving beyond just Nonnatus House, which is not a major shock given the course of the story right now:
“I’m exploring the notion of a community hospital. They were big in the ’70s and I was familiar with one in urban Liverpool; you would go there to see the GP or have your x-ray. By the end of the 1980s, they’d been phased out but they’re bringing them back now because it’s a model that works.
“So, we’ll see. We don’t know when series 16 will be yet because we’ve got the prequel and then the film. And at the moment, I’m still concentrating on getting this one out of the door!”
Will viewers be around for a new iteration of Call the Midwife? For the time being, let’s just say that we’re not too worried. The series has been comfort food for viewers for well over a decade, not just in Great Britain but all over the world. We foresee no reason to be concerned.
