The Voice: Battle of Champions video: Lucas West sings Elton John classic

After plenty of buildup, Monday night is going to bring to you The Voice: Battle of Champions over on NBC. So what more can we say about it now?
Well, first and foremost, the show has absolutely made a certain chunk of the rules more complicated than they need to be and we’re not going to fight anyone who strongly feels that way. Yet, in the midst of all of this, we do appreciate that a certain purity of the Blind Auditions is still being respected — and with that, why not go ahead and check out the latest preview?

If you head over to the link here now, you can see a sneak preview for The Voice in which Lucas West arrives with a cover of “Bennie and the Jets,” one that does feel rather reminiscent of what we saw from Haley Reinhart over on American Idol many years ago. Lucas clearly has soul, musicianship, and a real ability to make people connect with him in a short period of time. There are only three coaches this season in John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine, and it honestly feels right just from watching the clip alone. The chemistry between them is top-level and we do think it helps that they all clearly have a longstanding history of working with one another.
As for who the right coach for Lucas will be, it does feel already like he is gravitating over to John, something that we do understand for one simple reason: They have a similar musical sensibility, and we also feel like Lucas appreciates some of the connections (in other words, playful name-dropping) that he brings to the table.
