‘Bunheads’ season 2 renewal hopes dashed, sets taken down
For those of you growing increasingly frustrating about the possibility of a “Bunheads” cancellation, we wish that we had some better news to report for you today. Instead, what we have is chatter that the beloved ABC Family series, which we (along with many others) have fought very hard to save, could be over after one season of low ratings.
According to a report from Vulture, the sets for the Sutton Foster-starring show have been taken down in California, which is absolutely never a good sign. If a renewal was imminent, there would be obviously no reason to make this move at all.
However, this is not a condemnation of the show’s future, or proof that it has been canceled. There are many executives at the network that are fans of the show, and have relationships with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It also may have people discovering it after the fact, much in the way that some other cult favorite shows did after their first seasons. If ABC Family were to follow AMC’s trends from several years ago, they would give this show a chance to build an audience before deciding on its fate a couple of years in. Considering that the shows we are referencing here are “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad,” it certainly worked out well for that network.
Really, the best thing that “Bunheads” fans can do is encourage their fans to watch it, and have these new fans tweet or write the network to say they’ll be watching live next year. Having the same fan following alone won’t change anything; they need to prove that there will be a larger army next year to commit to the show live, that way it will be worth the network’s investment. Since both “The Fosters” and “Twisted” have drawn higher ratings than “Bunheads” did at this time last summer, they are more likely to stick around for another season.
What do you think about this news, and do you think that the future for “Bunheads” is now even more bleak than it ever was before? If you want to read any of our editorials surrounding this show, and how its network has done almost everything possible to disrespect its fans, all you have to do is visit the story over at the link here.

Such a shame! My 16 year old son and I have been watching the series on Amazon Prime, as did my 75 year old mother. The show has broad appeal, but it’s hard to find. ABC Family could hardly make the show any harder to watch for people who don’t have cable. If it was streaming on Netflix or Hulu this summer, the audience definitely would have grown a lot.
“Bunheads” is a fantastic, unique show that deserves time to grow and find its space.

Someone needs to point out to ABC Family that “The Fosters” and “Twisted” and “Pretty Little Liars” may have higher ratings, but they are all *the same people* watching all of those shows. As far as advertiser dollars, it’s diminishing returns for someone to advertise on all those shows because they’re just hitting the same eyes over and over. “Bunheads” has a very different fanbase, thus it offers a lot of *different* eyes to advertisers. Some times raw ratings numbers aren’t the only thing that matters.

My daughters and I love the show. I hope that it doesn’t get cancelled.
