Hijack season 2 episode 6 spoilers: Who is the real Big Bad?

As we get prepared to see Hijack season 2 episode 6 on Apple TV next week, we do not blame anyone who is desperate for answers — especially when the show has kept us waiting for a long time to get some of them.
What is one that is currently haunting us to a great degree? Well, it really comes down to the whole origins of this plot, and who is actually the central foe. So far, the finer details are sketchy. The medic Jess appears to have been hired by someone. Meanwhile, Stuart seemed to be in the dark behind bars. Someone clearly wants to get John Bailey-Brown aboard the train desperately, and obviously you can make the argument that this all the work of organized crime. Yet, it still has to be someone in particular … right?

This is where Hijack gets a little bit more interesting. The list of possible suspects, at least among characters we know, is not that long. Winter seems desperate to give Sam what he wants within reason. Meanwhile, Faber has been trying to figure this out as much as Sam has. We know that the people in the woods are working for someone … but who? Could you set up some huge twist around Olivia, or the detective working on the case? Maybe, but that would be a hard sell.
The most likely situation is simply what we saw mentioned in episode 5 — that an organized crime ring is simply trying to free John and using Sam as a pawn in the middle of it to make it happen. While this works logically, is it anywhere as interesting if we do not have a specific connection to the Big Bad? The show has to figure that out.
