Will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms inspire other spin-offs?
Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO television’s biggest winner for 2026 so far? It may be easy to make that argument!
Also, the origin story for this is rather curious in its own right. On paper, you would think that a Game of Thrones prequel based on George R.R. Martin source material would get a lot of promotion and by hyped as the next big thing. It really wasn’t. The story of Dunk and Egg felt almost under-the-radar, and we wonder in retrospect if that is by design. It is almost being thought of now as a pleasant surprise, and one of the best things to happen to the Game of Thrones franchise since season 5 or 6 of the original show.

Is it also possible now that the success of it leads to other spin-offs or prequels? Even before it premiered, we should note that HBO was looking at other ideas, including Aegon’s Conquest and potentially something more with Jon Snow. (Sure, the latter was killed off once, but what is dead may never die in this world.) We do think that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could cause them to look more intensely at any and all ideas.
Yet, it is important that in the midst of this, the network has to learn the right lessons from Dunk and Egg. The reason this show works so well is because it is charming and incredibly character-focused. It is not some hugely expensive epic, and future shows also do not need that. Instead, the goal just has to be really strong creatives that are both accessible and pleasing to book fans alike. The Snow series is the biggest gamble, and HBO is right to be the most hesitant on that.
With House of the Dragon ending with season 4, we certainly do think something else will be considered. It is really just a question now of when and how that happens.
