A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 4: Aerion’s plan

If there is anything we can say with assurance heading into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 4, it is that Aerion is the worst. Then again, that is also rather the point. This is a Targaryen who seems to relish being horrible, whether that means attacking a horse or attacking a puppeteer in Tanselle.
As we move forward, it seems like the guy has a new priority in mind: Making life miserable for Dunk. Also, making sure his life is cut short in general. It seems like he is setting up a unique sort of Trial by Combat to punish him further for that confrontation at the end of episode 3.

Aerion is played rather brilliantly by True Detective alum Finn Bennett, who certainly is excited for viewers to see what is ahead. Not only does he have a chance to go at Dunk, but there are also complications that come with Egg’s big secret. He described all of it recently to The Hollywood Reporter:
I think it really changes things in a very exciting way for Aerion. Like I said, he comes into this tournament very bored. They shouldn’t be here. He knows it’s embarrassing. And when Dunk seizes him on stage and beats him up, he’s kind of got an excuse now to make an example of somebody. This guy stood up to authority, and he’s going to make a f—ing example of him. And then when he says to Dunk, “If you’ve got nothing more to say,” and Dunk doesn’t say anything, it’s boring again. You know? It’s like, “Come on man, you’ve made your point. Keep going! Dive deeper!” And it’s all a bit, “Well, I’ll just punish this guy in front of everybody, and we’ll move on.” And then, when Egg bursts into the tent, the stakes are raised again. It’s suddenly really exciting for Aerion. He has an excuse to do something big and dramatic.
While we do think episode 4 is still going to have its fair share of fun moments, there is no denying we are dealing with much higher stakes. How can we not when lives are on the line?
