Will Trent season 4 episode 2: Is James Ulster dead?

To say that Will Trent season 2 packed an extremely emotional punch would honestly be putting it lightly. After all, consider everything that transpired, including the death of James Ulster, one of the most traumatic people within his entire life.
There are of course so many reasons why Ulster’s demise here is so complicated, with one of this being the conversation that he and the title character had. Beyond that, though, you also have the final words that James handed down: “See you soon.”

So what in the world is that supposed to mean? Speaking to TVLine following the airing of episode 2, here is at least some of what executive producer Daniel Thomsen had to say:
Will probably interprets it as being haunted by him. When he’s home with Caleb afterward, you see Will is haunted. But there’s a dimension to what Ulster means that Will is not anticipating…
Ultimately, we know that Will Trent, despite it having some procedural elements, does have other arcs that are meant to be more long-lasting. This in particular feels like something the show could choose to play out in a handful of ways. Even if Ulster is gone, we certainly do foresee there being some creative ways that he could return, especially when you think about all of the history and complicated layers that exist with this guy at this point.
for now, Will can move forward with his job, and the hope remains that he can find some healing in some other ways as time goes along. We do know just how unpredictable this series can be, so we do not want to feel like anything with this story is guaranteed based solely on everything that we have seen so far.
