ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 6 spoilers: Stana Katic makes her thoughts extremely clear
Well, it looks like there is not going to be any doubt whatsoever when it comes to what Stana Katic feels about Beckett and the job in Washington DC. During the season 5 finale of “Castle,” she was offered a choice: Either stay in New York City and continue working as a detective, or head down to Washington DC and take a much more lucrative job as a part of the FBI. It’s a chance to do more good with more challenging cases, and while there is a major issue to deal with here when it comes to Castle’s marriage proposal, this may just be too good of an offer to pass up.
Speaking about the matter in a new interview with TV Guide, Katic basically rolls her eyes at the possibility that Beckett would choose love and only love, and would then end up stuck in New York without giving Washington a shot:
“If she drops the FBI gig, she’s a loser. This is a modern woman’s story, and I don’t want to send the message that a woman has to choose love over a career. New York and D.C. are not that far apart, and Rick’s a millionaire. They can travel. I think it would really be a big disservice to the character to create a job opportunity like this and let it peter out.”
Based on the casting information that “Castle” producers have released at this point, it does appear as though Beckett is going to take the job; there are new detectives coming in after all, and it will be hard to shove all of these new faces plus her in the precinct. Does this mean that she will stay away from New York forever if she takes it? We would be surprised, given that this is her home, and also where she has found love and a family for herself.
Do you agree with what Katic says here, and that her relationship with Rick and her job are mutually exclusive? We want to hear your thoughts on this crazy debate below!

First of all I love most of the Beckett character and the ‘Caskett’ relationship. They surprised me by keeping it fun after the two got together rather than becoming uninteresting.
I also agree with Stana’s basic point here: that there is no need for a modern woman to sacrifice career for a relationship.
However, she frames her response a little self-importantly: ‘This is a modern woman’s story…’
No, it’s a show about a murder mystery writer who shadows NYPD detectives and helps them solve murders with his unconventional mind.
It’s also a show called ‘Castle’.
Now, I think I know what she MEANT – that her character’s portion of the story is a modern woman’s story. Unfortunately, that came to mean something really weird in the last three episodes of the season (swapping ‘Still’ and ‘Squab/Quail’ as intended).
I think they’ll pull a ‘strained relationship’ storyline and the only question is how badly Beckett damages the relationship on the way out. Is it a long-distance relationship or does she run away again?
I’m fearing a repeat of a misstep my favorite show – ‘Chuck’ – made between its second and third season. Say the words ‘Pink Slip’ to a ‘Chuck’ fan and brace yourself for a serious rant. After teasing a long-awaited relationship between the two leads they decided to artificially separate them and begin Season 3 with a ‘six months later’ and tried to explain how it all fell apart in flashbacks. The relationship recovered after 13 episodes (too long) but the show never FULLY recovered the magic of the first two seasons. Many fans pretend the first 13 episodes of Season 3 never happened and they are happier people for it.
I will be tuned in for the ‘Castle’ premier with my popcorn close at hand. But if they open with ‘Six Months Later’ over a wide shot of DC and cut to a hard-working, well-respected Agent Beckett who is also clearly miserable and fiddling with her bare ring finger I’m not sure that I won’t turn the TV off and go to bed.
Been there. Done that. Sucked.

I don’t know how you decide plot development, but I can assure you you are listening to the wrong group if you think you can separate the two and their romance. You will lose viewers by the droves. You already have a personality question arising – she is 37 in real life – has no seen men in her life and applies happily for lesbian roles.

Won’t work. Won’t watch if she leaves for DC. Tired of the “teaser” B.S. New female detective not needed.

L.E.’s got it basically right I think : “If Castle and Beckett are not together solving crimes, there is no show”. The whole premise of Castle (starting from the show lead-in) is Castle, Beckett, and the NYC connection (Mayor, etc.). I’ve always thought that she would take the DC job and turn Castle’s proposal down. The only question I’ve had is how do the (very good) writers get things back. My own opinioin is the first episode is a time-jump. Castle takes Beckett’s “no” badly, retreats to the Hamptons for an extended stay. Alexis is back from Costa Rica with her new free spirit boyfriend. Then …??

Honestly, I agree with her. A career and a relationship shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. We live in a world where women can and do balance a career with a relationship/ family. And I’m glad for that. But they usually make concessions to make it work. Especially with such a demanding job as Beckett has. And the one in DC seems even more demanding. When watching Jordan Shaw I wondered if that was how Beckett would end up doing it, raising a family with Castle. If it was a peek both for Beckett and us at what her life would be like.
Castle has already proven that he can take care of a kid, practically on his own. (I’m operating under the belief that Beckett is pregnant, because I think she is.)He works from home, which only strengthens the being able to take care of a kid and also means it’s a little easier for him to relocate if necessary.
But even with all this, the job still bothers me. Beckett and Castle first connected over the job, it’s what allows us to see their chemistry. In a lot of ways, it’s still what binds them together. And I don’t see Beckett being able to pull strings on her own to keep Castle on as her partner. I don’t think that she would get the job if she insisted that the only way she’d take it is if Castle was allowed to stay on as her partner…unless she takes Bracken up on his offer. And without that foundation, a lot of what the show is made off, is removed.
And even without that, Castle not being around Beckett at her job, seems to equal Castle not being around Beckett at all, or bareley even if he does move with her.
Even now, we see that a lot of Caskett’s relationship takes place at work because they simply spend most of their time there. And it isn’t a problem for their relationship because they work together, so they are together most of the time. Beckett doesn’t have an angry boyfriend waiting at home because she missed dinner…again, because he missed it too, so to speak. If he decides not to work a case with her, he’s still able to swing by and fall into it whenever he misses her. But he won’t be able to do that at her new job, once again, unless she takes Bracken up on his offer and he actually has that kind of pull.
I feel like we kind of got a taste of what Caskett’s relationship would be like if Castle didn’t work with Beckett, when Castle broke his kneecap and had to stay home.
So, do I think she should pass up this job? No, not really. It’s a big opportunity. But I have a feeling, she might not enjoy it, because she didn’t start doing the job because of the job, because she enjoys it. A lot of her enjoyment comes from working with her team.
(On a side note, again, operating on the idea that Beckett’s pregnant, I don’t think any self- respecting firm would hire a pregnant woman knowng that she would have to go on maternity leave a couple of months after she’s hired.)
Do I think she’ll be able to balance the job with a relationship with Castle? I’m not sure. It depends. Does she have enough free time? And if she doesn’t, will Castle be able to work with her? In relationships couples do need time together. And yes, it is possible to spend a lot of time apart and still make it work. But these two have practically been attached at the hip for the past 5 years. You don’t just go cold turkey from there.

I think she is just teasing. It’s a way of maintaining suspense and anticipation until September. If Castle and Beckett are not together solving crimes, there is no show. That’s why we watch it; its the Caskett chemistry. Do you want to watch Castle solve crimes with a new female detective, Espo, and Ryan with Beckett doing her own thing in D.C.? Seriously? Beckett might get some type of promotion to compensate for the D.C. job and she won’t feel like a loser. But, I say, you’re not a loser by picking love over a career. If you’re good there are always other jobs out there, but there is only one Richard Castle!
