NCIS season 23 spoilers: Could Mark Harmon still appear?

Tomorrow night on CBS, you are going to be seeing the NCIS crossover with Origins and in the case of the latter, a new appearance from Mark Harmon as Gibbs. We are going to get an update as to where he is, and all indications out there are that he will not necessarily be alone. Does this mean that he’s with another familiar character — or, did he just get a dog? These are the sort of paranoid questions that keep you up as a fan of the franchise.

So while Harmon will be a part of the prequel (which is going to be airing during the 8:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot for the week), it does not appear that he will be a part of the mothership. Could that change, and would he be okay to turn up on that show down the road? Everything, at least for now, feels up in the air.

Speaking to TV Insider about the crossover, Mark notes that co-showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal were really the driving force for him being on the prequel this time:

I don’t know. Gina and David had an idea. I obviously like them, I admire ’em, worked with ’em for a very long time. They’re very good. They had an idea and I liked the idea. I try really hard to think about what’s best for the show or what possibly can work for this show. But part of that also is giving them the ability to write what they feel is right for the reasons they feel it’s right. I try hard not to bother them, not to make their job harder than it is, and it’s plenty hard just developing this new show. And I’m reminded by that because it’s exactly what the mothership was when it first debuted. And this is on a similar path, which is not a bad idea if it works. So we’ll see.

We do hope that Gibbs is not NCIS again at some point, but we recognize the purpose in being careful. After all, that last scene with Harmon and Sean Murray in Alaska was so perfect — you don’t want to quickly undo that.
