Task season 2: Is it renewed, canceled at HBO?

Following the end of the first season today on HBO, is there about to be a Task season 2? Or, is this really meant to be the end?
First and foremost, let’s just go ahead and note that on paper, this is going to be it for the Mark Ruffalo series. This was billed by the network as a limited series from the start, and that does mean that nobody was thinking during development about another season.

So, could there be a way for all of this to change? Well, let’s just say that there is a reasonably good chance of that depending on what creator Brad Ingelsby wants to do with the story. Much like his other show on HBO in Mare of Easttown, the door is still open for something more — provided of course that another story surfaces. We tend to think the network would be interested. At the same time, they are not going to force the issue here. If there is nothing more to tell here, everyone is going to move forward.
For now, our advice is simply to be happy that we had Task in the first place, and also that there is a network in HBO that continues to be eager to tell these sort of stories. It is a real risk in 2025 to try to put something on the air that is wholly original. It is one of the reasons why here are a lot of networks and streaming services who are out there trying instead to just put on various adaptations and/or sequels to other properties that are out there.
For the record, we do tend to think that Task will get somewhat of a ratings second act once awards season arrives, as there are a few major contenders in the cast.
