Slow Horses season 5: Was Jackson Lamb’s story true?

It is shocking in a way, but we have already reached the halfway point of Slow Horses season 5. With that being said, the material this season has been great, culminating with arguably one of the best monologues of Gary Oldman’s career as Jackson Lamb told a story about Berlin in episode 3. It was gruesome and pretty traumatizing … but was he actually talking about one of his own experiences?

Close to the end of the episode, Standish confronts Lamb and questions the legitimacy of the story. He deflects and of course, we are left to wonder if he lied about the whole ordeal as a tactic to help get his agents complete an escape plan. As it turns out, we do not think we will ever have a full answer.

Speaking on all of this further to TV Insider, here is some of what executive producer Will Smith had to say:

“Even if none of it happened, the fact that you can think that, can summon that in the moment, says you probably have some issues. I mean, it’s very, very dark. And where we wanted to leave that was just a question mark really: Did it happen or not? Did it happen to this other person? … Because the way Gary does it, Gary completely draws you in. You believe it, I feel, and certainly the other characters in the room completely believe it. And then when it’s like, oh, it was a thing to tip people off about stuff, you think, well, he must’ve just been making that stuff up to fit the objects that were in the room that would help them break out. But then Catherine’s onto him, and you’re like, is there any element of that that’s true? What has he been through?”

No matter what you believe about the speech, we do 100% believe that this will lead to another Emmy nomination for Oldman. It may be his greatest speech in the history of the show.
