Chicago Fire season 14 premiere spoilers: A Sal Vasquez mystery

As we get ourselves prepared to see the Chicago Fire season 14 premiere on NBC tomorrow night, there is 100% a lot we have to discuss. Take, for starters, what is going on when it comes to newcomers at the firehouse.

Given that we are losing both Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett as series regulars, it made sense that at least one person would be heading to firehouse 51. That person is apparently Sal Vasquez, played by someone familiar with the greater Dick Wolf world in Brandon Larracuente. We know that he is someone who has a little bit of a reputation as a troublemaker, and that means that there could be conflict between him and some other characters.

With that in mind, there is also another big question that is happening here, as well — how did Sal end up at 51 in the first place? This is something that showrunner Andrea Newman describes to TVLine:

“There is a mystery as to why, when all of this is going on and all these layoffs are happening and brownouts and new policies happening in the city, why is this guy being moved, not only to a new position, but to what’s known as the best firehouse in the city? How did that happen? And why did that happen?”

Now, we do recognize that this is a story that the producers could answer right away … but we also do not think that they need to. From where we stand personally, there is 100% value in taking their time with some reveals. We also don’t think a lot of firefighters have time to really dig into this while also dealing with various crises — in other words, the day-to-day rigor that comes with doing this job.
