‘Breaking Bad’ season 5 premiere spoilers: A very funny premiere scene

Who says that every single element of the August 11 “Breaking Bad” premiere has to be deeply-serious and disturbing? What we have for you now is something that is pretty rare when it comes to this show: Scoop on a scene that does not actually involve Walter White, Skyler, Jesse, or even Hank / Marie. Instead, we’re talking about a pair of cronies having the eternal debate that many people in their position have had in the past: Iconic episodes of “Star Trek.”

Does this sound completely useless when it comes to the plot? Sure, but not every second of the final eight episodes can be stuffed with fast-paced drama, and knowing Vince Gilligan, this silly scene probably builds into something larger. Speaking to TV Guide about the moment, here is what the showrunner had to say:

“We have a scene in the premiere where Badger (Matt Jones) and Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) discuss their version of what would be the perfect Star Trek episode … They have some very distinct ideas, enhanced by certain herbal products.”

Considering that Gilligan himself is a major “Star Trek” fan (or a Trekker, if you prefer to use that term), this had to be a pretty entertaining scene for him to film. Who knows? Maybe at least part of it (minus the “certain herbal products”) was inspired based on something that he went through in his real life.
