‘Doctor Who’ season 8 spoilers: Matt Smith to leave following Christmas special

Doctor WhoRemember when Matt Smith reassured fans that he was returning to “Doctor Who”? Well, apparently he meant only to the extent of the series’ Christmas special. After playing the trademark character of The Doctor ever since 2010, Smith has decided to hang up the famous coat and bowtie prior to the start of season 8, which will air on the BBC (along with BBC America) in the new year.

The news was first released in a statement on the show’s official blog, where Smith had the following to say as he thanked the fans for their relentless support since following up the rather brilliant David Tennant in the part:

“Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show,” said Smith. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years … It’s been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys.”

The news may be especially sad when it comes to Jenna-Louise Coleman and fans of Clara, given that she and Smith’s Doctor had some pretty incredible chemistry together all spring. Not only that, but they really seem to be going somewhere interesting with their story.
