Fall TV preview: ‘Reign’ a different sort of ‘Game of Thrones’
Going into pilot season, The CW really made an effort to make one thing rather clear: They really wanted something with costumes. They tried to develop a “Wonder Woman” pilot, only to delay it for a little bit later in the year. Then, they also decided to try “The Selection” all over again in an effort to have something inspired by “The Hunger Games.”
Both of those series were not picked up, and instead, we now have “Reign.” It is a show that the network obviously has quite a bit of faith in, at least since they were willing to actually stick it after “The Vampire Diaries” in the fall rather than “The Originals.” It’s a romantic take on the Mary, Queen of Scots story, which is an interesting concept to begin with considering that the words “historical epic” and “The CW” don’t typically go hand in hand.
We will be honest here in saying that we don’t know quite as much about this show as some others debuting this fall, and nor can we say that this is our cup of tea. We don’t care for the vague feeling of the title, but there is no denying from this standpoint that a royal story like this would appeal to millions of young women. If marketed correctly, this could be a major hit, given that there is not much else out there quite like it.
What is your take about this series, and do you think that “Reign” could actually reign supreme this fall? This article is just one entry in our elaborate Fall TV Preview series, where we offer up our views on everything coming on TV this fall.
