‘New Girl’ season 3 spoilers: Could Coach actually return?

New GirlIf you are a fan of Damon Wayans Jr., there is a really great reason for you to be happy right about now. If “Happy Endings” does end up getting an 11th-hour reprieve by USA (which may or may not happen, since talks are ongoing), the actor could have an opportunity to be brought back, at least in a guest-star capacity, to a show that was originally going to be his home years ago: “New Girl.”

First, a history lesson for those who don’t know the story. Thinking that “Happy Endings” was probably doomed after its first season, Wayans filmed the “New Girl” pilot in second position as Coach, Nick and Schmidt’s aggressive roommate. Then, “Happy Endings” was renewed, and Coach was replaced in the loft with Lamorne Morris’ Winston. He has barely been mentioned since save for a brief explanation in episode 2.

While he is in no way responsible for casting, Jake Johnson, who is currently shooting a project with Wayans, told TVLine that if for whatever reason his current show did not end up at USA, seeing more of Coach could be on the table:

“I would be surprised if he doesn’t come back for a while [if ‘Happy Endings’ is over]. There would be such funny episodes with the Coach seeing what’s happened in the past two years since he’s [been] gone.”

While having four male pals to one Jess may be a little too much, Coach could turn into a fun addition for a while, should the show bring him back. Plus, the writers could have some mega fun creating some fake tension between Coach and his replacement in Winston.

Do you think getting a little Coach would be fun for “New Girl,” or should they continue to just bury that character in the past? If you do want to read a little bit more about the future for Schmidt on the show, you can do so over here.
