‘The Bachelorette’: Desiree Hartsock weighs in on possible gay ‘Bachelor’ debate

DesireeJust as we hear arguments and petitions to have a “Bachelor” or a “Bachelorette” that adequately represents some sort of minority group, there are also equal arguments concerning whether or not we will ever see a gay or lesbian star of the ABC franchise. From a standpoint of creating interesting, dynamic, and bold television that has not been done before, we would personally be all for it so long as it did not adhere to stereotypes.

As for whether or not it would happen, that’s an entirely different story given that a good percentage of this show’s audience is fairly conservative and tends to prefer to stay within the lines of what the audience already knows / appreciates.

So does Desiree Hartsock think that such a season is possible? While she star of the upcoming season of “The Bachelorette” admits in an interview with The Huffington Post that she would not be opposed to it, she also reminds us that it’s really not up to her. She did not control casting even for her own season; while she may have offered input in the end as to the kind of guys she likes, many of the larger pool were already selected. This is a little bit different than with Sean Lowe, where they had a little bit more of an opportunity to go through the list with specific ladies in mind, thanks to there being a couple of months in between the end of Emily Maynard’s season and the start of filming.

If there is a new same-sex dating show that surfaces, it will probably be on cable for the time being. If producers have not been willing to present Bachelor or Bachelorette that is a racial minority, we have a  hard time thinking that they could flip the script in another way.

What do you think: Will a gay “Bachelor” or “Bachelorette” season ever happen in some sort of mainstream manner, or do you think that we are still looking at something that is many years down the road? In case you haven’t seen a pretty unintentionally-hilarious rap video starring Desiree (and Soulja Boy, of all people!), you have to check it out over at the link here.
