Fall TV preview: Andy Samberg looks for laughs in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

The moment we heard the cast list for Fox’s upcoming comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” it was hard to feel anything other than excitement. After all, there are not many opportunities out there to see a show in this genre starring Andy Samberg, the brilliant Andre Braugher, and Terry Crews. It’s also rare to have a modern-day cop show that legitimately makes you laugh rather than showcase just a horror show of various victims / perpetrators in increasingly disgusting situations.

While we don’t know just yet whether or not this show will actually be funny, the first trailer at least is. Samberg’s character is almost a spin on Shawn Spencer of “Psych,” save for the parts where he pretends to have supernatural abilities and is not working for the force. The “Saturday Night Live” alum is a cop, and one who is brilliant in spite of his sophomoric attitude. He doesn’t wear a tie, doesn’t take work seriously much of the time, and even wears a speedo for the sake of doing so. (Ugh.)

When Braugher’s character enters the picture, things change, at least to an extent. The man is desperate to see this place shape up a little bit rather than remain a complete organizational failure, but trying to keep these people in line is proving to be no easy task. The characters at least seem marginally funny, and there are great opportunities for stunts and physical jokes in here. The one major problem? That the characters seem to be placed into different boxes in the trailer, which can be problematic in a “Go On” sense weeks down the line.

Do you think that this trailer delivers, or are you  still worried about “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” not having long-term potential? The show will air on Fox Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. after Seth MacFarlane’s “Dads”.
