‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Moving beyond Michelle Dockery’s Mary

Downton Abbey CastWhen it comes to “Downton Abbey” season 4, perhaps we are at times being a little bit selfish when it comes to what we decide to talk about. After all, let’s try to put it this way: We’ve spent so much time talking about the future of Michelle Dockery’s Mary on this site that the Dowager Countess would probably roll her eyes at us, but in doing so, we also have not really given due attention to one of the other important women in the series right now: Isobel Crawley. This is a woman who is going through a situation that is just as bad, and unlike Mary, she has an even smaller group of people to lean on.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on the subject of Isobel, executive producer Gareth Neame gives us a little bit of insight into what we can expect from this character moving forward, especially when it comes to how she will process Matthew’s death and try to move forward:

“Well, she’s quite obviously like Mary — she’s in a very sad predicament because she’s a widow herself, but she also has no child. She’s now lost. What is her purpose? She’s an oldish woman, she has no family left at all, what’s the point of her? I think that’s going to be her question … her family and relatives will have to rally and try to get her to turn back to life and find some purpose because she does have a grandchild.”

Isobel did manage to receive a surprising marriage proposal at the end of last year, but she turned it down in about as polite of a manner as she could. While we do not think present events would cause her to regret that move, they may at least cause her to ponder over if she would be much happier at present if she had someone to talk to.

This has turned out to be an interesting day when it comes to all things “Downton Abbey” as there was a comedic video released earlier in the day that has drawn plenty of buzz, and without giving anything major away, let’s just say that you can check it out over at the link here.
