‘The Following’ season 2: Is there a way for [spoiler] to return?
With the idea of Joe Carroll being dead / not dead, it is already clear that “The Following” is teasing the idea of non-deaths much in the same way a cat bats around a mouse. Therefore, it’s not too far out of the realm of possibility that they could bring back a character that is already killed off, even if we don’t expect this to start becoming Fox’s response to “The Walking Dead” over on AMC.
Annie Parisse had herself quite a run as Agent Parker during fourteen episodes of the season (as she was not around for the pilot), but in a sad / terrifying moment during the finale, we learned that she was dead as dead can be. There was no off-camera passing, no “DNA evidence” like with Joe. Ryan Hardy tried to breathe new life into her, but it just wasn’t happening.
However, there is still the possibility of flashbacks, and this seems to be what Parisse is hoping for now. The actress was present for the recent “Star Trek Into Darkness” premiere, and she explained to HollywoodLife that her non-ghostly form could come back if they wanted to flesh out her story for whatever reason via flashback:
“I don’t know [if I’ll return], but I wouldn’t put it beyond the realm of possibility! They do flashbacks as part of the show, so why not?”
Admittedly, the air of ambiguity is part of what makes this series so exciting. We don’t even know if the writers are sure what they want to happen yet, and some of this probably depends on when these people head back to Serial Killer-ville to begin with. Fox should unveil at their upfronts on Monday whether or not “The Following” is back in the fall or mid-season yet again, which should play a role in how quickly the writers need to turn up scripts.
We still have more for you to read / comment about on “The Following,” including this bit of loveliness as to whether or not Joe / someone else should be the big bad for next season. Be sure to check it out, and we welcome any and all thoughts.
