‘Bones’ season 8 finale review: Are Booth and Brennan finally [spoiler]?
On Monday night’s season 8 finale of “Bones,” we saw the return of Pelant, and a very violent and frightening case that put Booth’s life in jeopardy. However, that’s not what we want to talk about here to kick things off; instead, it’s one of the more unique and unexpected TV proposals in recent memory.
Let’s start with an explanation on that aforementioned phrase. Did we anticipate seeing Booth and Brennan get engaged at some point? Definitely, but what we did not see coming was the manner in which it happened. Basically, Bones replaced an engagement ring with a bag of jerky, and told Booth that it was the tough nature of this case that made her realize that emotion and dreams mattered to her more than numbers and facts. She knows that many marriages fail, and that the fire can stop burning after a while. However, she took that moment to finally let her heart win out over her head.
Now, we have to go back to the intense storyline for the hour. Pelant was seemingly targeting Booth in part thanks to some of his past in the government, and some allegations as to whether or not David Boreanaz’s character was trying to cover things up. Pelant was basically manipulating the system in order to convince other people to do dirty work for him, and this included convincing a young woman to go after him.
We said “seemingly” in the paragraph above for a reason, as it turned out that the target here was never really Booth at all. Instead, it was Sweets, and Booth was set up as a decoy in order to trick the Jeffersonian into protecting the wrong guy. This led to a journey in traffic to find their possible target, and to keep him safe. Thankfully, he managed to get there just in time for the female assailant to be taken down.
In the closing minutes of the episode, unfortunately, things went from “everything is right in the world” to “devastating.” Pelant threatened to kill five innocents if Booth did not turn down the proposal from Brennan, which led to the question as to whether or not he would actually do it. What mattered more: His life, or those of others? His decision to say no to the wedding at the very end literally left us in a puddle on the floor. While we know he did it for admirable reasons, she did not and could not understand that. The good news is that they are still together, but that’s the only good news for now.
What did you think about this episode, and were you thrilled to see Brennan finally pop the question? Be sure to share some of your thoughts below, and you can read some potential scoop on the future of “Bones” here.

I enjoyed the personal interaction between Booth and Brennan — the natural affection and tenderness was well acted and welcome–but the Pelant backdrop was just annoying and unrealistic. The magical powers he has to control the universe are so unbelievable that I can’t buy into the storyline. Please get RID of him!!
