‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4 finale spoilers: Scoop on Elena, Damon, and Stefan

If you want to see “The Vampire Diaries” go back to its roots, including a love triangle that really dominated the early seasons of the show, it appears as though you are in luck. The show’s upcoming fourth-season finale is going to do more than clear a path for Joseph Morgan and company to head over to their “Originals” spin-off show (which is practically a lock to be picked up): it’s also set to revive in many ways the “will they or won’t they?” dynamic between Elena and both Salvatore brothers, which may either feel refreshing or frustrating depending on your point of view.

So where could this romantic entanglement come from? Speaking to Give Me My Remote, executive producer Julie Plec explains that the confusion will be largely born out of the fact that Elena will finally be able to figure out how she really feels about Damon, and the sire bond issue will be a little bit out of the way:

“Without a doubt. It will revitalize the triangle for sure, and as far as the Elena and Damon information, I think what it will do is cement their relationship — or lack thereof — once she comes clean with a sense of at least semi-permanence, if not permanence. It won’t be a little more of, ‘Oh, I love you, but I have to stay away.’ Or, ‘Oh, I hate you.’ There will be something that feels, okay, we’re going to settle in this for a while. And good or bad, how is that going to go?”

There are going to be some moments for fans of Elena and at least one of the Salvatores in the “Pictures of You” episode Thursday night, in fact, even though the character is still a virtual killing machine that has no interest in being cured. It’s very clear that the brothers have their work cut out for them in trying to bring her humanity back into play, but it may be necessary in order for any of them to think about romance again.
