‘Mad Men’ season 6: Matthew Weiner on secrets, upcoming end

Mad MenIt’s been a pretty tiresome wait, but in just eight days as of this writing, “Mad Men” will finally be back on AMC for what will hopefully be a spectacular sixth season of storytelling. There are plenty of questions that await viewers, including whether or not Don cheated on Megan and how Peggy is going to be woven into the story, and we will hopefully have answers to just about all of it very soon.

So why all of the secrecy on the story? Not revealing an iota of anything has become a staple of creator Matthew Weiner’s tenure, as he notoriously keeps everything from casting to story completely under wraps until the show actually comes on the air. While this may lead to frustration among fans, there are also some benefits that come with it, including the opportunity to still have that feeling of surprise when you watch something that you never would have seen coming otherwise.

In an interview with the Saturday Evening Post, Weiner does describe keeping the wonderment intact as one of the reasons why he requires all of the cast and crew to be so coy during the filming process:

“I’m not trying to tease people. I just don’t want to give away to viewers what’s coming because not knowing what is going to happen is part of what keeps people interested. At the beginning of a season I’m always like, ‘I’m starting a whole new story. If you don’t like it, then it’s not for you. But it’s not because it’s not as good as last year. It’s just different.’ No matter what happens, you’ll be able to understand it.”

Weiner also says in the interview that he has no idea at the moment when the series will end, though he does predict that it will be sometime fairly soon. (Most speculation has hinted that season 7 could be the end, but you don’t have anything to worry about this year.)
