‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4, episode 17 review: A bad day for Ian Somerhalder’s Damon

Ian SomerhalderSometimes, it certainly doesn’t help to be good. If there is one thing that Damon Salvatore learned on “The Vampire Diaries” Thursday night, it has to be this.

Then again, was Ian Somerhalder’s character really operating with the best of intentions at heart? We really don’t think so. After all, he wanted to turn Elena’s feelings back on so that he could be with her, and not necessarily just so that she could be herself again. This Elena reminded him a little too much of Katherine, but instead of being just a woman in survival mode, this this doppelganger was crude, interested in all of the horrible things in the world, and also completely unsympathetic.

Elena was also not so willing to take the cure, and the lengths that she and Rebekah went to “protect” her were pretty drastic. Damon’s gotten his neck snapped so many times it may even feel normal to him at this point, and he’s probably going to be feeling this one emotionally for some time.

Of course, Damon’s not the only victim of a smackdown this week, as Klaus really felt it too. Thus far, we can’t really say that any of these attempts to stop Silas / Shane are really working, and as a matter of fact, they are not really that exciting to us, either. This has been one of the more complicated plotlines the show has presented over the years, and throughout at least ten minutes of this episode we just wanted to meet the real version of this character, just to see how nefarious he truly was.
