Selena Gomez’s ‘The Wizards Return’: A worthy send-off to the franchise?
With there being so much in the way of TV competition these days, it has become harder and harder in order for any individual show to actually become something that defines a particular age group or an audience. However, for those who did spend the past ten years watching the Disney Channel, “Wizards of Waverly Place” is probably one of those shows that defined their childhood or their teenage years.
With all of this in mind, Friday night’s “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex” is a slice of nostalgia for these fans. It is a champ to really say goodbye to Selena Gomez’s character in a way that also allows her to do a little bit more acting than she has over the past several seasons of the show. After all, she has been working hard to take on more roles, which explains why she took the role in the upcoming “Spring Breakers” to begin with.
Perhaps what is just as important as the actual TV movie Friday night was what it ultimately represented: a big-name star being kind enough to return to her roots, and show fans of a younger age group that she hasn’t forgotten about them. There is a major sense of gratitude that comes from something like this: Gomez knows that she would not be where she is today were it not for this show, and this serves as one final way for fans to say goodbye and have a little update on the life of Alex and her family. Applause all around? Definitely.
