‘American Idol’ notes: Adam Lambert, Lee DeWyze, Lauren Alaina, Mariah Carey
We have an assortment of cool things to share today related to “American Idol,” and we will begin with the favorite contestants at the moment listed by one Adam Lambert … who certainly has very good taste, and we agree with every single one of the people he highlighted while watching the show recently from Singapore.
In a new post on Twitter, the five singers that he personally identified were Burnell Taylor, Devin Velez, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison, and Angie Miller. The last lady we mentioned is probably the favorite right now based on her original song during Hollywood Week and her fan base (which also includes followers of Colton Dixon). Anyone who reads here knows that Kree is our personal favorite, but we see Burnell as an extremely talented darkhorse and the best that the guys have to offer.
We’ll get more into our personal picks later on today with the rankings, but we hope that Adam gets a chance to take part in this season of the show at some point prior to the finale.
Lee DeWyze meets Dave Grohl – There’s not too much to talk about here beyond the photo that Lee posted, but we have to say that he is one of the luckiest dudes around right now for getting the chance to meet who we consider to be a modern music legend.
Grohl has not always been kind when it comes to “American Idol” and other singing competitions in the past, as he once said the following to Zap2It:
“I don’t think music should be a career option. I honestly don’t. I got lucky. I won the lottery, but I think people should play music for the sake of playing music … and it should be its own reward. When I look at those shows, I understand those people are trying to do really well, but music’s not a contest. And it’s not a TV show. It’s real.”
As for a question for you guys, has there ever been a Foo Fighters songs covered on “American Idol” itself? We don’t think there has. We know that David Cook performed “My Hero” on the show’s tour, and the most-notable performance we can think of of a Foo hit being performed was Josh Krajcik doing “The Pretender” (which was specifically cleared for the show) on “The X Factor.”
Lauren Alaina’s new song – how about some new music now? Check out “Breakdown,” a new country ballad for season 10’s Lauren Alaina, which she performed while at a show in Long Island. We dig the mature sound, and it’s nice to know that she is already so deep into work on her sophomore release. (Video source.)
Mariah’s new music video – Also, be sure to check out Mariah Carey’s “Almost Home” video. The song is the theme for “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” which explains why there are so many movie clips in here. It’s a pretty standard video considering the subject matter, and we’re honestly a little bummed that someone auto-tuned Mariah’s voice so much. It’s like going to a Chris Rock comedy show and then asking him to take out everything potentially offensive … you don’t strip an artist of what they’re known for.
If you want to read more about the theme for next week’s “American Idol” episode, you can do so over at the link here.

Hmmm, Dave Grohl’s quote is intriguing. I always thought of AI as a good platform for unnoticed singers to launch careers. But he makes a point – do you want to sing to make money, or for love of the music?? Look at someone like Lee, who used to say he loved to sing where ever and whenever he could – shows, open mic nights, karaoke bars, etc… as long as he was singing. And he had complete creative control of his music and albums. Now he can only sing when and where he’s “scheduled” to and he’s got people looking over his shoulder on all creative decisions. So, is he truly happier now because he gets paid to show up and help someone sell cupcakes? Just some food for thought.
