‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6 spoilers: Kurt Sutter talks Jax, Tara, writing process
The first week in the writers’ room for “Sons of Anarchy” season 6 is over, and with that in mind, Kurt Sutter has shared the newest edition of “WTFSutter” with some general updates about how he and his team get from point A to point B.
While there are no specific plot details shared here, it’s equally fascinating hear about the various stages that Sutter goes through in order to get a script ready for production. For example, he often does not go in with every minute detail in mind for each one of his characters, as he prefers instead to just let some things build up organically through conversations and idea-sharing. The main goal of the early meetings with the writers are to hammer out some general details, including what the overall themes of the season should be.
Sutter shared that one such example of story arcs building over time in season 5 came courtesy of the shocker in the closing minutes of the finale with Jax and Tara:
“The fun thing about last season for me, and what I’m sort of not trying to replicate but go into this season with the same sort of approach to [is that] I had a general sense of where I wanted the season to go, but held on to it very loosely last season, and the story took over, the narrative took over, and the characters took over. It took the show into not necessarily a different direction from where I wanted it to end up, but it got to the same place in terms of stakes and it got there in a way that was much different from what I had envisioned early on … When that happens as the result of collaboration, it’s a blast.
“[Tara’s arrest] was sort of an organic place to leave [her] and Jax, and I really didn’t see that happening until the last two episodes. This is what made sense, this is what would happen as a result of the choices that Jax made and that Tara made. We shall see where that leads [them].”
