‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4: What happens for Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev
On last Thursday night’s “Vampire Diaries” season 4 episode, we had a moment that “Delena” fans were probably giving a standing ovation to as Elena, moments after she seemingly revealed under compulsion to Rebekah that she slept with Damon because she wanted to (and not because of the sire bond), she called Ian Somerhalder’s character and admitted that she loved him. Does this mean that things are going to suddenly be hunky-dory for the two as they ride (and suck blood) off into the sunset? Far from it. As a matter of fact, Damon may still not be fully convinced of anything.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly following the conclusion of “After School Special,” executive producer Julie Plec explains just what the moment meant for Nina Dobrev’s character, what we can expect to see for the two over the course of the next several installments:
“I think the takeaway, ultimately, is that Elena believes it so fundamentally that in that moment, it’s enough for Damon to let himself believe too. Yes, of course, the question is still gonna exist and always gonna exist. This isn’t necessarily the end-all, be-all now that that word [‘love’] has been spoken. The doubt is still gonna be there. And it’s gonna continue to eat at Damon for the next few episodes. Elena’s gonna continue to have to fight for it in how much she believes it. But in this moment, it’s these two people who have been trying so hard to do the right thing and stay away from each other, and after two really long horrible days, they just need to touch base with each other. Just letting himself allow it to be real for one small moment is enough for Damon.”
The road ahead is going to be a tricky one still for these characters; not only do they have to continue to navigate their relationship, but also handle the fact that Klaus is training Jeremy to complete his mark quickly and there is still the issue of Professor Shane and the vampire cure.
