‘Mad Men’ season 6 spoilers: John Slattery talks returning to set

Mad MenThere are not many opportunities out there to hear a star of “Mad Men” actually speak out about the filming process during production, mostly because so many of them are silent in fear of creator Matthew Weiner (a notorious advocate of revealing absolutely nothing about a show before it airs) coming at them with the sort of anger that Don Draper has when losing a campaign.

So with that in mind, why don’t we celebrate some new comments courtesy of John Slattery? In a recent interview with Time Magazine, the actor of course did not get into the finer details of what we can expect Roger Sterling to be up to following an acid-fueled end to season 5 that included the sight of his bare rear end during the finale; however, he did explain that he had an experience of comfort almost from the get-go on the show’s set this time around:

“I always end up working the first day [of filming], it seems like, when it sounds like your voice is coming out of your ear and you’re like, ‘How do I do this? How do I drink and smoke at the same time?’ This year, for some reason, I didn’t have that feeling. It was somehow easier. The scripts are great, that I’ve read. He’s still got it. Matt Weiner still has it.”

Just the fact that we are looking at some solid scripts again is a comforting thought, largely because most shows entering their sixth season are typically going to be on the way down quality-wise. After all, it’s hard for any writer to start up a show and think that far ahead, even if they have a road map planned out for the first few years. All we can tell you for sure thus far about the new season (which should premiere in the spring) is that it will begin with Don and Megan on vacation in Hawaii, and that Elisabeth Moss and January Jones will each be back in some capacity, even though their characters could have feasibly left the show’s universe (at least in a regular capacity) after the actions of last season.

If you want to see what a certain “Mad Men” character should have as their New Year’s resolution, you can do so by checking out the story over at the link here.
