ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 5 spoilers: An alternate plan to Rick’s dad

Every year, “Castle” comes up with a major story arc during the February sweeps that keeps people excited and guessing almost non-stop; and based on what we are hearing thus far, the same is going to be true about season 5. However, there is also a twist: not even the producers are saying with confidence just yet what this important story is going to be.

A matter of weeks ago, the talk first started to hit the internet that we could be meeting Rick’s father for the first time after all the past several years of buildup … but that is not guaranteed to happen by any means. Executive producer Andrew Marlowe tells TVLine in a new interview that the storyline with the mystery dad is “certainly something that we’re thinking about seriously and trying to find the right angle in on,” but no firm decision has been made yet.

So what happens if this storyline does not air? Marlowe explains that the show is also devising an alternate storyline that will provide plenty of excitement for fans, as well, and create the same sort of buzzy moment that was present last year when Jennifer Beals stopped by for a visit. The only real difference this time around is that Castle and Beckett are now together, and women from his past would be much more problematic.

The hesitancy to introduce Rick’s father just yet may also be sparked in part by the writers’ desire to keep one trick in their cap for as long as possible, especially after we now know who is responsible for the death of Beckett’s mom. Even though this show is largely a procedural, it is always nice to have some story down the line to keep people excited.
