‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Elizabeth McGovern looks to the future
So what did McGovern have to say on the subject? Of course, she did not bite when it came to giving the hosts the answer they were probably hoping for; but still, she at least did give out a little bit more information reminding us yet again that there could be at least one more year (and maybe more) in the can moving forward:
“Everybody feels that we hope that we know when it’s time to stop, that we don’t wear out our welcome.”
In reality, we see the possibility for a season 5 of the show being at about 50/50 at this very moment. There are plenty of situations in which bringing the show back for another year makes complete and total sense (ratings are one of them), but there is also the argument to be made that the show needs to go out on a creative high. Plus, it’s more of a common tradition for British tradition to end when it is ready, and not just drag on and on beyond its shelf life.
