‘Homeland’ season 2 finale spoilers: What is Carrie searching for in episode 12?
Times are changing in the world of “Homeland,” and on Sunday night’s season 2 finale, we are really going to see the meaning of the words “The Choice” that are part of the episode’s title. Basically, Carrie has to make a simple decision: does she want to be in a relationship with a man accused of being a terrorist, or is she more interested in trying to keep her job fighting future terrorist acts on America? Based on what she is told in the sneak peek below, it seems fairly obvious that she cannot have both.
Of course, the person conducting this conversation with her in Saul really may not have all that much room to talk. Why? He was let go from his CIA post last week, and basically told that he would be kicked to the curb and rendered unable to really do anything about it all thanks to him really figuring out that there was going to be an assassination plot on Brody’s life.
Since Saul for whatever reason is not telling Carrie this, is he trying to help her in his own way? While he may call her stupid at times and suspect that she is crazy, there is still a rather longtime friendship and camaraderie that exists between the two; he knows that there is really nothing that can be done to save Brody (at least from this perspective), and her keeping the job may be the best way to minimize her heartbreak.
What do you think about this sneak peek, and has this somehow make you even more in love with the fine work of Mandy Patinkin? If you want to watch the promo for Sunday night’s finale, you can do so over at the link here.

The episode starts off with Quinn still stalking Brody, watching the Congressman and Carrie at her lake house, where they first connected. Carrie goes to get breakfast as Brody prays near the lake, and Quinn has a perfect shot, but passes up on it. Carrie and Brody discuss their options, hence the title of the season 2 finale, “The Choice.” Carrie needs to choose between the CIA and a life with Brody.
The episode cuts to Estes’ house, where Quinn is waiting in the dark in Estes’ bedroom. Quinn talks about how he figured out that Estes wants Brody dead for his own selfish reasons (there was no clarification on what the reasons were). Quinn admits that he can’t kill Brody because of the fact that it will destroy Carrie, who almost singlehandedly brought down one of the biggest terrorists in the world, Abu Nazir. Quinn says that if Estes kills Brody, Quinn will be back to take care of Estes, because Quinn’s job is to kill “bad guys.” Seems like a very powerful scene, and very important for Quinn’s character.
Estes then tells Saul that he’s free to leave the basement where Saul has been for what seems like weeks. Estes says that he’s giving him a “break.” Saul doesn’t think so, but seems happy to leave (we don’t blame him). Estes says that Saul’s in charge of Nazir’s burial at seas, which we called in our previous article.
Brody and Mike Faber discuss Jessica. Brody gives his blessing to his best friend to date his now ex-wife. Jessica is getting rid of all of Brody’s clothing, and Brody seems sad but optimistic. Dana is home and asks her father about the suicide vest and Brody admits that he was in a very dark place when he came home, but not anymore. The family gets ready for Walden’s funeral service.
At the service, Estes gives a speech about what a great man Walden is. Carrie tells Brody to come with her, and they go to an office, where they proceed to have “celebrate” the fact that Carrie has chosen Brody over the CIA. However, Brody notices that his car isn’t parked in the same spot. Carrie starts to say a profanity when a huge explosion hits. It seems like the C4 for Gettysburg was put in Brody’s car and Brody says that this was Nazir’s plan the entire time. Carrie doesn’t believe Brody at first, but eventually comes around.
Immediately after the explosion, the two run away, with a plan to get into Canada, and then board a ship. They first stop at a storage locker to get some money and brand new passports.
Back at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Saul arrives and is told that Carrie and Brody are missing, presumed dead, and that Walden’s wife, Finn (Walden’s son), and Estes are confirmed dead.
Saul is obviously distraught, and leaves a voicemail for Carrie. Saul is the highest ranking officer and is in charge, and is also told that the blast originated from Brody’s car. With Brody now suspect number 1, the FBI searches his house as Dana defends her father. On the TV, a terrorist group claims responsibility for the attach and shows Brody’s video from from season 1, when he put on the suicide vest. Obviously, Mike, Brody’s family, and Jessica are shocked that Brody turned out to be a terrorist. Brody presumed dead, as previously written, but if he’s found, he’s instantly going to become enemy number one.
The episode then transitions to Brody and Carrie. Brody slowly starts to realize that Carrie won’t be coming with him. She promises that she will do everything she can to clear his name, and the two of them have a long talk about how they almost made it. Brody thanks her and leaves to go into hiding.
The episode ends with Saul standing over 250+ dead covered in sheets, praying. Carrie walks in and calls for Saul. He realizes that his protege is still alive and smiles. Fin.
