‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4, episode 8 review: Are Damon and Elena [spoiler]?

Nina Dobrev“The Vampire Diaries” season 4 has felt like a rollercoaster ride at times this season, and on Thursday night we hit yet another bump in the road courtesy of the all-new episode entitled “We’ll Always Have Bourbon Street.” It was a crazy hour with plenty of crazy twists and turns, but the ending may have been something that both depressed and excited fans of Damon and Elena.

So what exactly happened? If we are being frank about it, it is fairly simple: after Stefan challenged Damon to figure out whether or not Elena was really sire-bonded to Ian Somerhalder’s character, he did and unfortunately learned the truth: while Elena may have feelings for him, she is not in full control of her actions. This certainly takes some of the passion out of things, doesn’t it? This is not the first time that this has happened to Damon, and this is where the story went from here.

Through some pretty great flashbacks, we learned that Damon once had a relationship with a woman named Charlotte who he cruelly left in a state of disarray over her feelings for him in New Orleans, and even after 70 years the sire bond did not go away. With that in mind, Damon realized one thing: if he really wants to be with Elena, he has to make this go away. (Thus, we have the likely story for the next few episodes.)

With so much of the focus being on the three leads, there was the story with Hayley working with Professor Shane to assemble twelve hybrids … but considering that we don’t full know where this is going yet, it’s harder to be excited about it. On the other hand, we are fully invested in the craziness currently happened with a confused baby vampire, and a “bad boy” whose heart is suffering some serious pain right about now.
