‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4 spoilers: What’s next for Ian Somerhlader, Nina Dobrev

As you saw at the end of Thursday night’s new “Vampire Diaries” season 4 episode, there was something that happened to Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev’s characters of Damon and Elena that just about no one saw coming: they hooked up, but it was not entirely as real as anyone was expected it to be. Instead, what we are looking at here is the age-old case of a sire bond, and it’s one that brings out some suppressed feelings inside of Elena that she is not even fully in control of.

So will this secret eventually lead to heartbreak? It’s possible, but it’s also hard to blame Elena too much since it is not something that she is keeping from her ex Stefan’s brother intentionally. As a matter of fact, E! News reports that it is at least going to be a little while before Elena does figure out just what is going on with her and Damon beyond just their sudden physical affection for each other.

When it comes to the more immediate aftermath of what happened, things are going to be in a word awkward. Elena has to figure out not only what the future holds with Damon, but also with a man whose heart she is sure to smash into a million pieces considering that their breakup was only a week ago. However, one thing we can seemingly confirm is this: Damon and Elena are not going to be back to the way they were before the hookup. There is no changing what happened, and they may even be together in some sense of the word moving forward.

Even though we are still torn when it comes to this plotline, what do you think: was it cool to see the writers come up with a way to get Damon and Elena together so soon, or do you think it is a cop-out of what could have been?
