NBC’s ‘The Voice’ rankings: Is Cassadee Pope the new rival to Amanda Brown?

What a difference one week makes on “The Voice.” If you had asked us a week ago just who would be gone from the competition, we probably would have told you Melanie Martinez and Cody Belew. Both had been in danger before, and they were the only two people left in the top ten who were placed there by the coaches. However, we’re now short of two people in Sylvia Yacoub and Bryan Keith who felt destined for the top 8, and one performance alone may have given us a brand-new favorite to win the whole competition.

It’s hard to just the contestants based on any one thing, so with that we are taking everything into considering from vocal performance to screen time to even just how successful a given coach has been producing hit artists in the past.

8. Cody Belew (last week: 9) – As crazy and fun as his Beyonce dance moves were, the real truth when it comes to Cody at the moment is that he hasn’t had a particularly strong performance vocally in a couple of weeks, and he needs to find a way to remind himself just what the title is for this show.

7. Melanie Martinez (10) – There is a part of us that wants to rank Melanie higher just for being so original, but at the same time we just can’t given that the competition is genuinely fierce this year, and there are so many good performers left. She just needs to find a way to keep tapping into that emotion while simultaneously giving strong performances.

6. Terry McDermott (4) – Melanie has probably performed better than Terry in recent weeks, but he has proven to have some sort of fan following. Now, we just have to beg Blake to do the same thing with him that he did with Cassadee this past week: take chances, and give him something that is from the past twenty years to sing.

5. Dez Duron (7) – Christina Aguilera is the only coach now with one artist left in the competition, and she better be working overtime to help a guy who needs to build on the momentum of his “Feeling Good.” His biggest obstacle is that whether it be in terms of appearance or edit, all four people ahead of him right now have an edge.

4. Trevin Hunte (1) – While it was fun to see Trevin do something different this past week beyond just stand on stage and sing a gigantic ballad, let’s face it: his version of Usher’s “Scream” was not even hot enough to be a hot mess. The hype is going to probably carry him for another week or two, but there has yet to be a moment in the live shows that lives up to the pre-show hype.

3. Nicholas David (2) – The bearded man is off of another stellar performance, and one that featured Cee Lo getting a little teary-eyed. The biggest thing that excites us about this guy is that it really feels as though there is somewhere still to go when it comes to potential, especially if he goes down a sort of folk-bluegrass route. Our song choice for him? Anything by Mumford & Sons.

2. Cassadee Pope (6) – There’s a huge groundswell for Cassadee this week coming off of “Over You,” which has to be the biggest moment not just of this season, but quite possibly in the history of the entire show. One week can make a favorite, but we have to award consistency at least until seeing if the one-time Hey Monday singer can keep it up for a second straight week.

1. Amanda Brown (3) – Sure, her cover of Grace Potter’s “Stars” failed to get the same sort of mass attention, but it was equally divine and yet another strong performance from a woman who almost did not even make it past the blind auditions. She has three performances right now that we can rank in the top 10 for the season, and if America is looking for someone who is almost assured to put on a great show, she has to be the top pick right now.
