NBC’s ‘Smash’ season 2 spoilers: Liza Minnelli scores singing gig

Let’s face it: if there is one person out there in the world perfect for “Smash” season 2, it’s Liza Minnelli. Therefore, it’s rather hard to not be happy for the actress / singing after Robert Greenblatt confirmed today that she is going to be guest-starring on the NBC drama series as herself.

As if this news was not enough to make you excited as it is, let’s also include the following for good measure: she will also be performing an original song composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who create the numbers for the show. Minnelli and Greenblatt have been close since their days together at Showtime, and while she maintains a high profile, she does not really make too many guest-starring appearances on TV these days.

In case you missed the prior announcement this fall, “Smash” season 2 will be airing on Tuesdays this year, and is currently set to premiere on February 5 at 9:00 p.m.c Eastern time. (It will be pushed back to an hour later the very next week, where it will settle in for the rest of the season.) Minnelli is hardly the only big-name guest star stopping by this season, as Jennifer Hudson, Sean Hayes, and Jesse L. Martin are among the notable names, and there could be plenty more coming up given that the show is still in production, though it has faced some delays this year courtesy of Hurricane Sandy.

What do you think about seeing Liza stop by “Smash,” and are there any other legendary performers that you would want to see make an appearance?
