‘Big Brother Canada’: Over 10,000 apply; now let’s just hope they’re awesome…

Anyone who loves reality TV has to be rather pleased about the recent influx of new programming north of the border in Canada. While we have seen it before with “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” and “Canadian Idol” (which actually first discovered Carly Rae Jepsen), the trend of Canadian adaptations really kicked off earlier this year with “Canada’s Got Talent.” It was quickly followed up by “The Bachelor Canada,” and then finally, we have “Big Brother Canada” coming to the Slice network early next year.

So what do we have to be looking forward to here? There are a plethora of details still to be announced, but according to The Huffington Post, an impressive 10,000 people applied to be locked up in the house. Here is what Shaw Media’s Senior Vice President of Content in Barbara Williams had to say in a statement:

“We have been blown away by the incredible response from Canadians throughout the casting phase of ‘Big Brother Canada.’ This is a series like no other, an extreme social experiment where people willingly walk away from their families, friends and day-to-day lives for nearly three months … Based on the excitement and passion of the thousands who have applied, we know that we’ll find a legendary group of intriguing characters and big personalities for the inaugural season.”

Just the fact that Williams says “nearly three months” is encouraging, as that means there is not going to be getting just a watered down version of the series with a shorter amount of time in the house. Now, we of course want to see live feeds, multiple broadcasts a week, and ridiculous characters to laugh out for several episodes at a time. The house is already being constructed, and we have to think challenges are at least being thought up by the crew. The format is the same as the American version of the show, even if there are different producers running the ship.
