Saturday Night Live: Pete Davidson becomes Thanos in Scarlett Johansson monologue

Saturday Night Live

Scarlett Johansson was the host of this weekend’s new episode of Saturday Night Liveand apparently, there are a few things we learned. Take, for example, that the show can still do an Avengers parody in 2019.

We didn’t see this some sort of opening to Scarlett’s show in this vein, especially since the Marvel-movie saga is over in its current form. Yet, the series still found a way to get some burn out of this, including casting Pete Davidson as Thanos, who was making people disappear after buying a certain gauntlet online.

What made this entire monologue work were the frequent (and funny) references to all sorts of good stuff related to the show behind the scenes. Take, for example, comments about how Pete doesn’t show up for every episode anymore. Or, think in terms of the llama that is always in the hallway or that Mikey Day and Alex Moffat are on some level the same person.

This was one of the more creative SNL monologues that we’ve seen on the show in some time, and we give a lot of credit to the writers and Johansson for trying to come up with something a little bit different. Also, there were even some comments in here about Scarlett’s real-life relationship to Colin Jost, who she is now engaged to. It’s not often that you see celebrities this open about their personal lives, but this was the obvious elephant in the room. (The only other one is Johansson saying in interviews that she can play any role, but we don’t think that we’re going to be seeing that addressed at any point.)

If you love SNL at its most meta, at least we know you’ll enjoy this — and the same thing goes if you are an Avengers fan.
