Gabielle Union talks meeting with NBC after America’s Got Talent exit

Over the past week or so, there has been an eruption of headlines regarding America’s Got Talent over the departure of judge Gabrielle Union. She was let go for uncertain reasons alongside fellow judge Julianne Hough, but later reports alleged it had to do with complaints and concerns Union had regarding her treatment on the show. That included frequent questions about her physical appearance and her hair, as well as her frustrations over a charged joke that Jay Leno made while at the Judge Cuts portion of the show. There are also reports of tension with Simon Cowell over him smoking indoors and a reported stance that she come to him with any production-related concerns.

It’s been a tense week or so, but Union confirmed this afternoon on Twitter that she did sit down for what was a five-hour and, in her words, “productive” meeting. (She does not mention who the meeting was with, but executives with both America’s Got Talent and NBC were supposedly in attendance.) While there, she was able to explain further her concerns over what happened to her on the show — her goal, meanwhile, seems to be to bring about change moving forward.

Note that it doesn’t seem as though Union is angling to get her job back on America’s Got Talent in the future. That hasn’t been a part of the conversation insofar as we’ve seen. Yet, she does want to bring to light the culture of the show and make it better for future people in her position. AGT has already filmed a new season of The Champions featuring Heidi Klum and Alesha Dixon from the British version of the show. We imagine that judges for the flagship season will be announced at some point in the new year. There isn’t any clear timetable for it at the moment.

It goes without saying that AGT should be doing just about everything in their power in order to ensure that they have a workplace that is as accommodating as possible for everyone who works there — making the judges comfortable and treated equally is important, and it also trickles down to the crew and everyone we don’t hear about behind the scenes.
