The Good Doctor season 3: Show boss on Shaun, Carly storyline

At the moment, the state of Shaun and Carly on The Good Doctor season 3 remains unclear, and for a number of different reasons. For starters, they’re people with stressful jobs and a lot of responsibility. Beyond that, though, they’re also currently struggling with intimacy and finding a way to balance things out.

During parts of this past episode, we had opportunities to see Shaun express a willingness to be with Carly in a more sexual way; yet, the pressure proved to be a lot on him — it wasn’t even so much that Carly was applying anything hard, but rather than Shaun himself was pushing himself. A part of it is his own personal fear of being alone. At the end of the episode, he ended up departing her bedroom while the two were trying to cuddle each other. At that moment, things proved to be too much.

So where is Carly after all of this? We think that she’s trying her best to be supportive, but it’s also challenging given how much the pendulum can swing with this relationship. Speaking via TVLine, here is some of what executive producer David Shore had to say:

I think she’s probably a little angry. She knows that he’s not trying to hurt her, but it’s frustrating because she’s trying to love somebody, but it’s not going the way that she wants it to. She’s trying to be understanding, but as we’ve seen at different moments throughout their relationship, Shaun does challenge her… He’s doing his best, but even when we try to do our best, we make mistakes.

There was a time when we felt strongly like the midseason finale was going to be structured mostly around the Shaun – Carly relationship. Yet, we’re getting more of a sense now that this will carry through entering the new year. Do we think that both characters care for each other greatly? Absolutely. Really, patience is going to be the most important thing — alongside, of course, working to grow and evolve with each other. There are things that Shaun and Carly both need to do in order to make this relationship work even stronger.
