The Good Doctor season 3 episode 10 (fall finale): Shaun visits his parents

The Good Doctor season 3

The Good Doctor season 3 episode 10 is airing next week on ABC, and all signs point to this being a powerful installment. Not only is this the fall finale, but it does also mark a chance to see Shaun Murphy’s parents back in this world. We’ve seen them before briefly in flashbacks, but we now have a chance to see them in the present as Freddie Highmore’s character pays them a visit.

For a little more insight, view the full season 3 episode 10 synopsis below:

Dr. Shaun Murphy visits his father on his deathbed and the family reunion reveals unexpected results. Meanwhile, Dr. Neil Melendez, Dr. Alex Park, Dr. Morgan Reznick and Dr. Claire Browne treat an injured star NFL player with severe spinal damage; and Claire addresses her mental health.

It does make sense that this episode is entitled “Friends and Family” — while it is about blood relatives, we feel like another big theme here is going to be how your friends can ultimately become your family depending on the situation.

Who is playing Shaun’s parents?

Prepare for a recast! While we’ve seen Kirby Morrow and Rebecca Husain play these characters in the past, there will be new actors taking on the present-day version. Battlestar Galactica veteran Michael Trucco will be playing the father, whereas Joanna Going of Kingdom fame will play Shaun’s mother. We imagine that these characters could turn up beyond just the finale, but we’re not sure that Shaun is going to want to stick around them for too long a time. Just consider this for a moment: The fact that he hasn’t had the best overall relationship with them. There have been some significant bumps in the road, really to the point where Shaun’s been estranged from them. His relationship with these parents have likely informed some of the way that he handles social dynamic in some other parts of his life as well.

Speaking via TVLine (who reported the casting), executive producer David Shore had the following to say:

“From the beginning, we have talked about Shaun’s relationship with his parents … He has certainly cut them off, [but] none of us can truly cut ourselves off from the past. The past is part of us, and that’s what we wanted to explore here.”
