Doctor Who season 13 already being planned, says EP

Even though Doctor Who season 12 isn’t premiering until we get around to 2020, you should know that it is far from the end. As a matter of fact, there are already some hints and discussions about a possible season 13!

Speaking in a new interview right now with the Radio Times, showrunner Chris Chibnall made it clear that “it’s categorically untrue [that he is leaving the show],” and then added that the cast and crew are “already planning the next series after this series.” That means a season 13 will be coming! With the current timeline in mind, we’re not expecting it to be back on the air until 2021. Nonetheless, we do think that it’s an exciting development and there’s fundamentally no reason to worry about the future while season 12 airs. (There have been reports of a five-year plan since season 11, but we’ll see how the show performs and exactly what the future holds.)

So what’s coming up in terms of the story for season 12? Star Jodie Whittaker told the publication that we are going to be seeing some big risks and some creative ideas explored fully:

“It doesn’t feel like we’re regurgitating anything that we’ve done before … I feel like we’re treading new ground for each of the character journeys, and the development of everybody’s storylines.”

We think that the struggle for Doctor Who as a series is going to be fundamentally the same no matter when it comes on the air. For starters, the writers need to at least do something to celebrate the nostalgia of the show and some of what viewers love about it. You need to balance that out, though, with also embracing the characters you do have and also the current era. We think that the New Year’s Special did a good job with this, in particular thanks to the return of the Daleks. We know that there is at least one classic favorite returning in season 12, and there is a chance that there could be more beyond that.

For now, we just have to be patient — this is something that definitely comes with the territory of being a Doctor Who watcher.
